Trails by use
Pick a use to see the trails that allow it, longest first, with a count for every national forest.
Trails where the Forest Service records hiker and pedestrian use as managed, accepted or discouraged, which all mean allowed. Restricted means not allowed and is excluded.
Trails where pack and saddle use is allowed. The record does not distinguish horses from mules, llamas or goats.
Trails where bicycle use is allowed. E-bikes are recorded separately and appear as their own chip on a trail page.
Trails open to motorcycles. Where a forest has published a Motor Vehicle Use Map, the trail record is meant to match it.
Trails open to all-terrain vehicles, which the Forest Service defines as motor vehicles 50 inches wide or less. Wider vehicles are a separate use.
Snow trails where snowmobile use is allowed for at least part of the year. Most are groomed routes recorded as a separate snow trail rather than the summer trail under them.
Snow trails where cross-country ski use is allowed for at least part of the year.
Trails with at least one segment the Forest Service has evaluated as meeting its accessibility guidelines. The accessible length is listed on each trail page and is often shorter than the whole trail.
The Forest Service records, for each segment, whether a use is managed, accepted, discouraged or restricted. The first three mean the use is allowed. These pages count a trail once any of its segments allows the use.
